On This Day in History...

I have to say, I couldn't have asked for a better way to start my nineteenth year of life, I won't tell a lie....I was worried this was going to be the worst birthday ever, because I am away from my family and friends and all the people that know me best. However, I was more than blessed during my day by this new family that God has given me here at JWI.

I was overwhelmed with so much love today, from the RD's decorating my door with a banner and balloons, to putting candles in a milkshake and having my new friends sing "Happy Birthday", and to top it all off I got to start off this new year of life in one of the most beautiful places I know, Hume Lake!

God is so good! I just want to say thank you to everyone who sent birthday wishes my way and for those who have walked with me on this journey of life! I am honestly so blessed and I don't think I will ever be able to say thank you enough.

I am so excited that I get to share this next year with all of you :)

Always,
Paige

Wake up call...

Being at the Joshua Wilderness Institute has a way of keeping you on your toes and week two was a prime example of that. It was also a reminder that God will sometimes do things in my life that will catch me off guard, but I know that I have to trust Him because nothing will ever catch Him off guard. This is exactly what our staff was trying to teach us this week, the wonderful act of trusting in someone when you are not sure what is coming next.

Monday morning came much earlier than I would have preferred, at 4:30am I was woken up by the words “You have 30 minutes to pack this bag, wear shoes you can hike in and be in the great room by five.” We met in the great room at five and our staff told us that this week will be about trusting that they know what is going on and they will get us where we need to go. We were told to leave our watches and electronics at the Joshua building, because we would be relying on our staff to tell us where we needed to be and we were also told we would be giving up showers, make-up (for the girls) and mirrors for the entire week and so with that, we began our hike into the woods. We walked in the dark for what seemed like forever until we finally arrived at Wildwood, just in time to see the sun coming over the mountain.

We were split up into small groups and each day we did a Group Initiative, teaching us how to work together as a team and understand how to be a good leader and how to be a good follower in order to accomplish the task at hand. It was much more difficult than it seemed, we were a group full of leaders, so to take a step back and be a follower was a huge lesson in humility.
It was also a great picture of why the church is described as a body, it is made up of different parts, just like we as people have different gifts and abilities that God has given us to compliment and help each other. Christianity is not this island we can live on alone, we need other believers to come along side us and help us. I learned that I can't always be a leader and that sometimes my ideas are not the best and the most painful lesson of all is that sometimes I am completely wrong and someone else is right.

One of the most difficult elements of Wildwood came on Tuesday night. We did an extended solo time; we sat out in the woods for what I am going to say was almost five hours. Just me and God, it was much more difficult than I thought it would be, I learned that I hate to be alone for that long, but it was a huge eye opener to see that I don't spend enough time alone with God allowing Him to just speak to me and be with me. The discipline of meditation is one that I don't have but want to work on this year.

Our final G.I. came on Wednesday night at dinner, remember how I said that being at Joshua has a way of keeping you on your toes well here is another reason why... we were told to sit at tables in groups of eight, so being the "starving" college aged kids we are, eagerly sat down waiting for food to come our way, but before the food could come our way the staff went around to each table and tied our hands to the people on our right and left, so we became this giant circle of confused young adults. the object was to work together as a team to get our food from the kitchen, bring it back to our table, serve it, eat it, and clean it all up. Crazy, I know! It was difficult but we definitely worked together to accomplish our common goal....EATING!! I don't think I've ever had more fun at dinner before, or made that big of a mess.

On Thursday we were told to pack our bags again but this time we were going back to the building. We all had to come together once again to tear down the tents and kitchen at Wildwood, so it could be stored for the winter, until it is set up again for next summer. After that we walked back to the joshua building and rested up until dinner.

We also had our first  girls night, we got to know our female staff on a more personal level as they shared their stories and struggles with us and showed us that we are never alone in the things that we struggle with. It was such an encouragement to know that God has surrounded me with a group of girls who will end up being life long friends, willing to share my joys and my struggles as I journey on through life after Joshua comes to an end.

This is my weekend off so I am just lounging around the building. cleaning my room and doing homework.

Overall it was a really hard week but it was also a really great week!

Until the next time
Always,
Paige

Drinking from a fire hose....

September 8-16,2012
(sorry the post is a little bit late)
This is was my first week at the Joshua Wilderness Institute. It is hard to believe that move in day was only a week ago. It has been a very long and tiring week but it has also been very rewarding.

After arriving at the Joshua building Saturday and checking in, we quickly moved through the day, from lunch to parent orientation, during which we signed our Joshua covenants for the year.  After we were let out of Ponderosa Chapel, my parents said goodbye and left for home and I realized as the drove away that, Joshua will be my home for the next nine months, as shocking as that reality was, I was also reminded that this is where God wants me and even though twelve months seems like forever, Joshua will come to an end sooner than I think, so I need to be faithful to what God has given to me for this next year, because this opportunity will never come again.

The rest of the week was full of information and trying to settle into a routine. We toured Hume Lake Christian Camps and were introduced to several of the departments that we will be working in over the course of the year. We ventured into Ponderosa kitchen, Support Services, Activities and even up in the trees at High Adventure.

Classes started this week as well and I have loved them all, this semester I am taking Elements of Bible Study, Old Testament Survey, Israel Prep and Life Skills. We were pounded with information in all of our classes, the phrase many of our teachers used was “trying to drink from a fire hose” and that is exactly what this week felt like, but even though it was a massive amount of information I learned so much and it was only the introduction to all my classes so I can not even begin to imagine everything I will be learning when we actually dive into all the material.

We had our etiquette dinner Thursday night, which was a great bonding experience for our class, especially as we danced the night away in our ballroom dancing lesson.  It was so fun to see everyone able to relax and just have fun, not worrying about how ridiculous we all looked trying to do the cha-cha.

It has been a great experience getting to know the other fifty-five Joshua students. All the names and faces have been hard to remember but I am finally starting to get them all memorized.  I have loved these beginning stages of building a strong community of girls; because that is something I have not had in my life before and I am so excited to see how God will use them in my life this next year as I begin to see them and love them as my Joshua sisters.
It was also my first weekend working, Michelle and I were handed the incredible job of babysitting the three Bosman boys, while Chuck and Sara had their hands full with the fall marriage retreat. It was such a great time to have fun with the boys and get to know Michelle.

I am looking forward to all the God has in store for me in these weeks and months to come. I was told before I started Joshua “You only get out of Joshua as much as you put in” so I am praying that God will give me strength to pour in everything I am into Joshua and that it would be so much more than head knowledge and that I would learn to be anchored in Christ and nothing else.

“Therefore, behold, I will allure her,  and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her." Hosea 2:14

God has a strange way of leading us to places we never thought we would end up. At least that is how my life has played out thus far. I never imagined that I would be 350 miles away from home, living in an amazing place where I am totally surrounded by God's creation.

God has given me the opportunity of a lifetime, I am part of the Joshua Wilderness Institute here at Hume Lake Christian Camps, crazy I know. I never thought  as a high school camper that I would be given the opportunity to live here at Hume Lake for a year.

This is where you can journey with me through this crazy, awesome challenging experience, as I work and live here at Hume and go on trips to Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Israel.

I'm excited to share everything God is teaching me here at JWI

Always,
Paige
